NEW Steyr SCOUT II Bolt Action Rifle
Introduced in the late 90s, the Steyr Scout bolt action rifle was designed in collaboration with Colonel Jeff Cooper and arguably represents the best execution of Col Cooper’s scout rifle concept. A quarter a century later, this rifle is not only alive but is evolving as Steyr Arms have just released the Steyr Scout II. The new rifle retains all the scout rifle criteria specified by Col Cooper but has a couple of design changes, most notably a new aluminum chassis/receiver with an integrated bedding block, full-length top Picatinny rail and M-LOK slots.
POTD: Viking Themed CZ Shadow 2
The Latin motto DVC which stands for Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas (Accuracy, Power and Speed) was not known to the Vikings. DVC is the somewhat more modern motto from Jeff Cooper to define the essential elements of shooting. That didn’t stop MP Customs to make some advanced custom Cerakote work on a CZ Shadow 2 pistol. Rune language and Viking theme, Cerakoting in Copper Brown, Graphite Black and a secret mix to make it look like copper.
The Development of the Handgun – Jeff Cooper at World Shoot 1993
Vince Pinto posted an interesting historical tidbit on Let’s Talk IPSC (Facebook) with a quote from Jeff Cooper (1920-2006). If you don’t know who Mr. Cooper was, it can be mentioned that he was a United States Marine and is seen as one of the creators of modern shooting techniques.
Limited Edition JEFF COOPER Commemorative 1911 Pistols by Ed Brown
Ed Brown has released limited edition custom 1911 pistols in the memory of legendary Colonel Jeff Cooper. These pistols are designed in collaboration with the family and close friends of late Colonel. The pistols combine all the features that Jeff Cooper would consider must-have for a defensive 1911.
Wilson Combat "Gun Guys" Video Series with Bill Wilson and Ken Hackathorn
Wilson Combat launched a video series on their YouTube channel where Bill Wilson and Ken Hackathorn talk about guns and practical shooting. The series is called Gun Guys. What makes it especially valuable is that they share their experience and tell stories from the days when practical shooting was just becoming a thing and the part of the firearms industry supporting it was experimenting with different ideas and concepts.
Ruger Sneaks 6.5 Creedmoor Gunsite Scout To Market As Davidson's Exclusive
It looks like Ruger quietly rolled out a 6.5 Creedmoor Gunsite Scout as a Davidson’s exclusive without so much as a peep as far as I can tell. With the 6.5 Creedmoor skyrocketing in popularity, it only makes sense that Ruger rolls out a Gunsite Scout chambered for the super flat shooting cartridge.
Modern Personal Defense Weapon Calibers 008: The 10x25mm Norma Automatic
Oh yes, it’s that time. The 10mm Automatic, what hasn’t been said about it? Well, a decently sourced article about its history*, maybe, but that’s for another time. Right now, we’re considering the 10mm Auto (or 10mm Norma as it’s more prim and properly called) as a personal defense weapon and submachine gun caliber. The 10mm was designed in 1980 by Swedish company FFV Norma AB with input from Jeff Cooper as the most powerful and capable automatic handgun round of its day, but will that extra power pay off when pushed beyond its design limits into the 50-300m range, at least according to the JBM Ballistics calculator?
Learning to Run a Bolt-Action For Real – Chris Baker Goes Over Getting Started in Practical Rifle Shooting
When it comes to my shooting hobbies, sometimes I feel like a bit of a black sheep. I am neither a race gun driver, nor a benchrest shooter. I don’t blast IDPA targets and Texas stars with an STI DVC Open, or break 200 rounds per minute cyclic smoking brown cardboard with my braked JP Enterprises AR-15. I don’t compete in F-Class, and I don’t even do Cowboy Action (cue a complete lack of surprise from our readers).
You Will Soon Be Able to Own The C-19 Canadian Ranger Rifle – Tikka Introduces the "Arctic"
The civilian variant of the Canadian Rangers’ new C-19 bolt action rifle has finally been formally announced, with a projected release date in October. Canadian gun blog TheGunBlog.ca reports:
Deputy Sheriffs, Lieutenant Colonels, and the Manual Safety: Context and Grey Matter in Pistol Development
Earlier this week, my fellow TFB writer Pete M wrote a post arguing that a manual safety has no place on the modern defensive handgun. I think he’s right for the most part, but I’d like to explore something he didn’t consider.
Firearms Food for Thought: Conditions of Readiness
When Col. Jeff Cooper came up with what he called the conditions of readiness he had the 1911 in mind. Cooper was a 1911 man – well, he was also a 10mm man, but that’s another story. For those who are unfamiliar with the various conditions, here they are explained as briefly as possible:
Forgotten Weapons Calls the Bren Ten "The Most Tactical Pistol"
The Bren Ten can trace the roots of its design back to 1979. It was created by Michael Dixon and Thomas Dornaus of Dornaus and Dixon Enterprises, but there’s more to its story than that. In 1980 they decided to get advice from none other than Col. Jeff Cooper, whose advice proved invaluable. It’s chambered in 10mm, but in the early stages the men tried out wildcat rounds such as the .40 GA. In the end the original Bren Ten was only in production from 1983 to 1986; Dornaus and Dixon were forced to file bankruptcy in 1986, bringing an end to manufacturing. That isn’t the end of the Bren Ten story, though.
Gunsite Announces New Classes
Gunsite Academy, which was originally founded in 1976 by Colonel Jeff Cooper as the American Pistol Institute, has announced they’ll be adding to their class lineup in 2016. Gun owners come from all over the country to attend classes at Gunsite, and with options ranging from self-defense to hunting to Defensive Vehicle Tactics Training, there’s always something new to learn. Learning takes place thanks to the instructors at Gunsite, who an impressive bunch; each of them possesses a specific skill set in addition to being fantastically proficient with pistols. An opportunity to learn from the team at Gunsite is one that should never be passed by, and with the addition of even more classes, the reasons to make the trip just keep piling up.
Gunsite Academy Coming to Virginia
Gunsite Academy, the firearms training institute founded by Colonel Jeff Cooper, is bringing its modern pistol techniques to Virginia. The respected academy is partnering with the Colonial Shooting Academy in Richmond, Virginia. Colonial was SHOT Business Magazine’s Range of the Year in 2013 and is also a National Shooting Sports Foundation 5-Star Range. It’s also home to the biggest indoor range in the United States. Classes coming to the Virginia-based academy include those like Gunsite’s 250 Defensive Pistol Course, which is the academy’s most popular course which was started back in 1976 by none other than Col. Jeff Cooper himself.
