AC-Unity is a firearms and accessories manufacturing company located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They have recently started exporting new quad stack 60-round 7.62x39mm AK magazines to the USA. This company and its products are mostly unknown to the American gun community that’s why I decided to do a little research to find out who they are and what they make.

Xtech Tactical has introduced a new 7.62x39mm 30 round AK magazine called MAG47. The new magazine has a polymer construction with metal reinforced front and rear lugs as well as metal inserts underneath the feed lips providing a metal reinforcement for the feed lips, too.

Circle 10 AK is currently putting together a five cell RPK magazine chest rig for the market. When I asked the owner why specifically for RPK magazines, he pretty much replied, “Why not! There aren’t too many similar designs on the market, and it is flooded with standard 30 round magazine chest rigs!”. Although making a product for the sake of there not being one isn’t always a good business plan, in this case a valid point can be made. True, 30 round magazines reign supreme in the AK world, with the overwhelming majority of use by AK owners is with 30 rounders. However, unlike the AR world where the magazine capacity really stops at 30, RPK74 magazines, and even steel 45 round magazines are extremely popular. There have been numerous attempts at making extended capacity magazines for the AR platform, but so many of these have ended in failure. Surefire is probably the most successful venture yet, with the 60 round quad stacked magazine (of course excluding Beta Mag, but I want to focus on conventional magazine design).

Anyone here going to SHOT? If so, you’ll be able to see a couple of offerings from Navy Arms (and really, hundreds of other vendors).

S.T.A. Training Group walks Lil Red thru the fundamentals of a tactical reload using an AK style weapon. The twist comes in when he hits the mag release with the fresh magazine. He bases this on the possibility of inducing a malfunction when utilizing the top end of the magazine. The instructor says that if you miss the magazine release with the mag in your hand, then that mag will strike the one in the gun. Which could cause the top round to slide forward due to inertia. If the top round shifts position, it can create a malfunction when loading it into the weapon.

The Matra Group manufactures steel AK-47 magazines in Bosnia. Here is a video showing all the steps of their manufacturing process. A lot of it is still done by hand as opposed to automated manufacturing.

Magpul announced a slew of new products last week, and I had a chance to examine them firsthand at the NRA show in Houston, Texas. Probably the most notable were the MBUS Pro backup sights made of metal, not Magpul’s signature polymer.
