[SHOT 2026] DoubleTap SnakeShot Magnum - Dual-Projectile Defense Loads
Double Tap launched their SnakeShot Magnum line at SHOT Show 2026, combining #9 shot with hardcast wadcutter projectiles in five magnum revolver calibers. These defensive loads ship February 2nd and deliver substantially deeper penetration than traditional snake shot by stacking a solid projectile behind the shot charge.
NOTE: Double Tap warns against running any SnakeShot Magnum loads through suppressors. The dual-projectile design and magnum pressures create issues with suppressor baffles not designed for shot charges.
Traditional snake shot dumps all its energy into spreading pellets, leaving you with minimal penetration past a few inches. Double Tap's design splits each cartridge between shot and a hardcast solid. The shot spreads first for close-range threats like snakes, then the wadcutter continues downrange with enough momentum to reach 14-25 inches in ballistic gel depending on caliber. The .500 S&W and .454 Casull loads push past 22 inches, while .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .327 Federal hold 14-16 inches.
Double Tap optimized each loading for the case capacity and pressure ceiling of its parent cartridge. The .500 S&W packs 400 individual #9 pellets plus a 180-grain hardcast solid at 1300fps from a 7.5-inch barrel. The .454 Casull runs 130 grains of shot with a 140-grain wadcutter at identical velocity from a 6-inch tube. Smaller cases like .327 Federal and .357 Magnum split their payloads roughly 50/50 between shot and solid projectiles.
SnakeShot Magnum Specifications:
- .454 Casull : 270gr total (130gr shot + 140gr solid), 1300fps/6" barrel, 22-25" penetration
- .500 S&W : 380gr total (400 pieces shot + 180gr solid), 1300fps/7.5" barrel, 22-24" penetration
- .44 Magnum : 225gr total (100gr shot + 125gr solid), 1300fps/4" barrel, 14-16" penetration
- .357 Magnum : 140gr total (70gr shot + 70gr solid), 1200fps/4" barrel, 14-16" penetration
- .327 Federal : 105gr total (110 pieces shot + 50gr solid), 1000fps/4" barrel, 14-16" penetration
Double Tap confirmed the February 2nd ship date applies to all five calibers. These loads expand Double Tap's existing SnakeShot lineup, which uses lighter shot-only charges for applications where deep penetration isn't needed.
MSRPs as of writing:
- .454 Casull : $39.95/20rds
- .500 S&W : $49.20/20rds
- .44 Magnum : $34.40/20rds
- .357 Magnum : $31.90/20rds
- .327 Federal : $31.90/20rds
Would you trust a dual-projectile snake shot for defensive carry, or does splitting the payload between shot and solid seem like a compromise that does neither job well? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
