Limited to 500: SOG 40th Anniversary Fat Guard Bowie
SOG Knives is marking its 40th anniversary with a limited-edition release of the Fat Guard Bowie, restricted to 500 individually serialized knives numbered one through 500. The knife arrives at $399.95 MSRP and is available now through SOGKnives.com.
The 40th Anniversary Fat Guard Bowie draws inspiration from SOG's original S1 Bowie, the knife that launched the company in 1986. SOG frames this blade as a modern interpretation of covert fighting knives carried by MACV-SOG, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Studies and Observations Group, which conducted unconventional warfare missions behind enemy lines across Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam throughout the Vietnam War.
The blade itself measures 6.1 inches in clip-point configuration and ships in AUS 8 stainless steel, a material SOG states resists corrosion while maintaining edge retention. The knife features a polished black PVD finish and an ergonomic stacked leather handle.
In 2026, a bowie knife collector might reasonably be a vinyl enthusiast with a dwindling attention span, someone who nostalgically yearns for tools that accomplished singular tasks without software updates, a survival-minded camper planning for scenarios that will never occur, or simply a person with high regard for historical military instrumentation. This knife should check several of those boxes.
Each knife ships in a handcrafted pine display case with a glass viewing lid, accompanied by a commemorative SOG 40th anniversary Zippo lighter, a rugged black leather sheath that stores an included sharpening stone in an external snap pocket, a certificate of authenticity numbered to match the blade, and an anniversary plaque. All items fit within the display case as a complete presentation.

Do you still view the Bowie as a practical tool, or has it evolved into pure collectible territory for modern carry workflows?

I’d like to get a modern reproduction of the original Vietnam era SOG knife. Preferably not AUS 8 though.
Yeah, I am unimpressed with AUS8. What most of the price is for is the gadgetry accompanying the knife. Why not buy a regular SOG bowie from one of the many knife vendors and call it a "commemorative"? Type up a history of the particular knife with MACV and the SOF and there you go. Saved yourself several hundred dollars. You can probably find a good history of both on line that you can just copy, change Helvetica typeface to some fancier type face that strikes your fancy or just print the initial capital letter in Old English bold and a bigger type size if your printer can handle that or just the first word in bigger type size. I know most printers can handle that. See what I mean? And this is just in a reply block. MIdwayUSA had SOG Bowies on sale a while back. I don't know if the sale price is still on but it was a good price and I brought one. Now all I have to do is get a MACV history and SOF activities histories and print them out to go with the knife.
