There are many different types of steel targets; understanding which one is best for you will prevent you from wasting money on an expensive target you don’t use.

Static Steel Targets

Static steel targets are fixed to a support at a set distance. They come in many shapes and sizes and are primarily used for precision shooting and plinking.

The Caldwell 13” Octagon AR500 Steel Target is the best all-around target because it’s durable, versatile, easy to see, and reasonably priced.

I found this target on some websites for less than $100, which is a steal in my opinion, because even at full price, it’s a great value.

The bright yellow powder coat finish is easy to see from any shooting distance and it’ll hold up to the abuse from handgun and rifle cartridges at safe distances.

The only downside I could find about this steel target was the fact that it’s not a standard size for shooting competitions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t practice with it. However, there are seven other size options to choose from, so you’ll be able to find one that works for you.

I consider the Caldwell 13” Octagon AR500 Steel Target one of the best steel targets on the market because it is reasonably priced and will last many years of shooting.

Why I Chose It

I love the Challenge Targets Texas Star because it’s a fun way to test your skills, and it’s durable.

The Texas Star is unique because once you shoot a plate, it falls off and causes all the other plates to spin. With each plate knocked off, they often change direction or spin faster, making it a great target for testing your target transitions and timing.

This commercial-grade target is rated for handguns at 10+ yards and rifles at 100+ yards and the AR500 steel ensures you’ll get many years of use out of it.

The biggest downside is the price. Due to the patented design and quality materials, the Challenge Targets Texas Star is pretty expensive, but you’ll enjoy thousands, if not millions, of rounds of fun with this target.

The Texas Star is used in 3-Gun and USPSA matches, plus law enforcement training, so when you get this target, you’ll not only get a fun target, but a steel target that will help you become a better shot.

Why I Chose It

The Shoot Steel 12” x 20” AR500 Static Target is a great budget-friendly option because it comes with almost everything you need (only need a 2x4) at a reasonable price.

This AR500 steel target is ⅜” thick and can handle pistols and short-action rifle cartridges, making it versatile for most shooters.

Though I have a small range on my property, I appreciate that this setup is portable. If I wanted to, I could transport it to other locations or easily store it in my shop.

The biggest drawback (and it’s not that big at all) is that these steel targets are not painted, making them difficult to see at long distances. However, this is an easy fix.

Due to its price and versatility, the Shoot Steel 12” x 20” AR500 Static Target is a great option for those on a small budget.

The Challenge Targets IPSC Handgun Harmonic Target is ideal for competitive shooters and self-defense training because it’s durable, designed for handguns, and allows the shooter to hear where they hit the target.

Since these targets are made from ⅜” thick AR500 steel, you can trust they will last you for years.

What stands out the most is that you can tell where you hit the target by the sound it makes. “B” and “C” zones have a dull, low-frequency sound, whereas zone “A” has a high-frequency sound.

My biggest frustration is the price of these targets. For the high price, I wish it had a better stand (steel, not a 2x4).

However, if you’re training for competitions or self-defense and are tired of punching holes in paper, then the Challenge Targets IPSC Handgun Harmonic target is an excellent option.

Why I Chose It

The Shoot Steel ½” AR550 Armadillo 12 x 20” short-range rifle target is incredibly versatile, durable, and simple to set up.

I love that they used extremely strong AR550 ½” steel so that you can shoot this with short-action rifles at 50 yards or pistols at 10 yards.

One of the most overlooked features is how it reduces ricochets by directing the bullet into the ground. This also helps eliminate pitting, so your target will last even longer.

This target is expensive, but I don't believe it's overpriced since it’s entirely constructed from steel.

If you want to train rifles and handguns, this is the target for you; don’t pass it up.

Maintaining steel targets is pretty simple, which is why they’re such a great investment. I’ve owned steel targets for well over a decade with minimal maintenance over the years.

Cleaning & Care

A little rust won’t hurt the target, but if you want to keep it in tip-top shape, I recommend scrubbing off the rust and adding a protective coating. If you have a Texas Star or dueling tree, you might want to occasionally add some heavy-duty grease to the moving parts.

Protective Coatings

A powder coat or even spray paint will help keep your targets from rusting as fast. Apply a fresh layer after each trip to the range to keep your target looking brand new.
